Interview with Sweet 1985's Jenifer Toby

I recently discovered jewelry site Sweet 1985 through LinkedIn.  I spoke with the co-owner Jenifer Toby, and found out that Sweet 1985 isn’t like every other jewelry company.  Each piece is handcrafted, high-quality, and truly unique.  This season’s collection was inspired by Jenifer’s trip to Cambodia where she taught trafficked women and children how to make jewelry.  Sweet 1985's current signature piece is the Apsara Chainmaille Handpiece.

Jenifer and her friend Berenice Diaz started the business in 2009.  For the friends and jewelry designers, “Sweet 1985 is a reflection of days passed.”  Their line is youthful, edgy, fun and eclectic.  Sweet 1985 is for stylistas with personality and a sense of style.  Only quality materials are used in the line.  They are locally sourced and handmade in New York and California.  Molded, custom, and metal elements are used, as well as Swarovski crystals, throughout the collection.  And of course, “each piece is designed and produced with love. “

As a successful entrepreneur and jewelry designer, Jenifer has some great advice for those of us that want to work in the fashion industry.  It’s all about “determination.”  Also, “It's really hard to make it in fashion and people are willing to take low or nonpaying jobs just to be in the 'fashion industry.' The competition is heaps but if you're willing to fight for it, you'll make it.”  Jenifer’s style icon is Gwen Stefani and her style is “raw, delicate and edgy.”

Make sure to check out other beautiful pieces on Sweet 1985's website!
