When designing, Elizabeth always has a basic idea while drawing her inspiration from her materials - the fabrics and fibers. She then follows the direction the fibers take her. She incorporates painted silks and cottons, as well as using weaving and quilting techniques. She describes her style as “ethereal yet contemporary,” and I definitely see that in her designs as well. When asked who her style icon was, she replied, “Do you have time for all of them?” That’s would be my answer to that question too, so I thought that was funny! She adores the classics like Valentino, Balenciaga, YSL, and Chanel; and likes the organic nature of Comme Des Garcons, as well as the modernity of Rick Owens.
I think Elizabeth’s best piece of advice for aspiring fashion industry professionals is encouraging. She says, “Be very very patient, persevere, and know it will happen.” Who couldn’t appreciate that!
Hear more great advice from Elizabeth Anyaa during SMU Fashion Week tonight. The Styling and Designing Panel starts at 6:00 in Umphrey Lee room 241. I hope to see you there.
